Sohjoa Baltic’s The Roadmap to Automated Electric Shuttles in Public Transport is a publication series of five volumes which shares information on self-driving public transport and practical experiences from the robot bus trials from the Baltic Sea Region, collected during the project in 2017-2020 in eight countries in the Baltic Sea region.

Sohjoa Baltic project consortium had thirteen partners, cities, universities and companies. The participating organisations experienced in a practical way, what implementing the autonomous public transport pilots requires and how the future of public transport services may look. During the project, the consortium learned about the state of the art of autonomous vehicle technology and how the legislation regulates driving such vehicles on a national level.

During 2018-2020 three cities, Kongsberg (Norway), Helsinki (Finland) and Tallinn (Estonia), deployed successfully large scale pilots in mixed traffic and open streets, with thousands of passengers onboard during months of operating period. Automated, electric shuttle bus pilots were organized for the first time in history of Poland and Latvia, in city of Gdansk and two cities in the Zemgale region. These showcase pilots presented the novel vehicles to the curious passengers in restricted areas.

The publication series is the legacy to complete the project. The aim of Sohjoa Baltic was to bring knowledge and competence on organizing environmentally friendly and smart automated public transport, provide guidelines on legal and organizational setup needed for running such a service in an efficient way. The project was supported by Interreg Baltic Sea Region programme.
